Topic: The English Language Program in VCU

Introduction: backgrounds (why our group did survey about the English Language Program in VCU)

Body: After survey, our group found three main complaints and we analyzed what factors made students dissatisfied

1.     Some students have dissatisfactions with their current level.

-       Comparing with other tests, ELP officers should examine the SLAP test which is performed in VCU can be a good tool to evaluate students’ level.

-       ELP officers should give more opportunities to rearrange their level.

2.     The large percentage of students regard the pronunciation class as the most unhelpful class

-       ELP officers should find the problem in the pronunciation class and try to re-organize the class.

-       Introduce different style of pronunciation class which were successful in other ELP courses

3.     Some students that ELP advisors didn’t meet their satisfaction, and if students configured their requirements, they thought that they are not enough.

-       To increase students’ satisfaction. Expand the meeting time between an advisor and a student.

-       ELP officer should conduct feedbacks which students are fully satisfied.

Conclusion: the important role of ELP courses (the bridge between a foreigner and an English student).  ELP officers have responsibilities for meeting students’ satisfactions.

. People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Three evident reasons below can explain this phenomenon.

First of all, studying in college or university offers more chances to improve expert knowledge. In high school, students just learn general knowledge and common sense which are necessary to live conveniently. However, in college, people can learn more specific and advanced knowledge which are hard to get from the high school education, and people can get the professional knowledge in their majors which would be required in their work places. For this reason, people may go to college, even though the tuition is so high.

Second, attending college or university gives new experiences to people. College or university students have more opportunities to meet new friends who used to live different hometowns, and they also have more chances to take extra school activities. In my case, I was a member of a group about helping disabled people, while I was a college student, and through several times of volunteer activities, I got to know what the real service was. If I had not attended the activities, I couldn’t realize that.

The third reason for attending college or university is some tips for career preparation. In college, people can learn new skill for careers with a lot of opportunities. It should be great opportunity to expose myself to having interaction between college and real working fields. That’s because each college or university has tons of information about jobs, and sometimes each major has some connections with some companies. Even if looking for more specific jobs, career preparation in college should be required.

Decisions can be made quickly, or they can be made after careful thought.

I think that your details are good. However, upon your 3rd supporting detail, I am not sure

Universities should require students to take classes in many subjects

yeajin:

: Universities should require students to take classes in many subjects for three reasons.

1.The main purpose of universities is giving a opportunity to accumulate knowledge of all students. Students try to learn more by taking classes. However, some students want to take classes only what they want. This will not help to collect their knowledge in many ways. Therefore, universities should require students to take classes in many subjects.

2. students will be given more options to choose their futures. If students take many different subjects, they will realize what they really want to do in the future. While they are learning, they will find which is good or which is not good for themselves.

3.It will give them wide sence by taking many subjects. People do not know what is going to happen in the future. If students learn as much as they can, they will know many kinds of information and they can apply to their real lives when they need.

Your supporting details are very reasonable. However, I think that your 2nd and 3rd details are almost same. You’d better to combine 2nd and 3rd. Your details would be perfect

Traveling in a group led by a tour guide, or traveling independently

Some people say that for most people, the best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide. I agree with this opinion.

1.     People will enjoy the companionship when they are traveling in a group. A group touring tends to have many members. These people travel together eat together and stay in the same accommodation. During the trip, they can make a new relationship and they will never feel lonely.

2.     People will enjoy the comfort and safety of group travel. Sometimes, traveling alone may face with dangerous situations. This might be because that people tend to have insufficient information about the touring places. However, a guide has a lot of information including places and he/she can give some useful tips.

3.      When people travel in a group, they can save the cost. Because there are a lot of places discounted when people are in a group. Therefore, people may be able to enjoy an economical trip.

characteristics of a good class

What are the characteristics of a good class?

1. Lively and free discussion- All students can communicate with their teachers and classmates easily and free. The students can learn more important knowledge, which can not be learned in textbooks, such as the social relationships or the manner of communication with each other.

 2. Fun and varied activities - Not to be bored a class; the teachers should make the atmosphere of their classes more active and fun in which students who loose interests in their classes can more participate and enjoy their classes.

 3. Unbiased treatment – Teachers should not be unbiased to their all students. Teachers sometimes tare more care of some specific students who are excellent in classes. It will discourage the other students, so that they are distanced from the classes more and more.

I like that students and teachers need to have free communication. If so, the classmates and teachers will have a better relationship by talking their problem each other. I think this is the best way to make a good class.

I think your ideas are very creative.

The three characteristics of a good class

There may be three characteristics to form a good class. The first one is covering adequate materials. A teacher in a good class should cover the adequate materials which are qualified for the student’s level. If students take difficult materials which they can not cover, they may not afford to take the class. As a result, they should not be able to concentrate the class and may fail the class. Second, A good class should have adequate equipments. They may assist students to take class efficiently. To the specific, audiotory or visual equipments in the class may help students to understand easy enough the contents of lectures. Therefore, adequate euqipments will be able to make synergies for the students. Lastly, the thrid characteristic of a good class is the attitude of students and teachers. It is important that they be the biggest part of the class. According to their intention, the atmosphere of the class will be a good class or a bad class. Therefore, teachers and students should have responsibilies for the class and should have active attitudes in the class. If a class have three characteristics which I mentioned, it may turn out an ideal class.
